Panic Room 2: Panic Harder

That annoying sound can only mean one thing- it's time for me to sit at this dingy keyboard and scrape together another BS article. Once I hit "publish" the magnetic locks that hold me in this sub-basement will open, and I can get back to doing handstands on my martini keg.

So what games have I been playing lately? Well, like so many of the contributers here, I am caught up in the "Retro-Mania". A remake of the 2000 classic Pokemon Gold & Silver:

Great... now "Heart and Soul" is gonna be stuck in my head

Yeah, I play Pokemon. Its part of my initiative to stay "hip" and keep my finger on the pulse of what the kids are up to.

Now I actually played the originals back in 2000, but to be honest I don't remember much from those days. Its either the dense fog of time, or the dull haze of martini keg-stands. I can't even say which starter I picked. Which brings me to my first artly crafted Haiku:

Fire Water Grass,
These starters are second rate.
Charmander is best.

Look upon him, and know awesomeness
(wikipedia again)

But I can't fault the remakes for this oversight. They're faithful reproductions and, as unwise as it might have been, the original Gold and Silver versions lacked Charmander as a starter. Seriously though, what were they thinking with this thing-

Some kind of hippie!?
(bulbapedia this time, its a useful site)

Aside from quibbles about design, what does this game actually ADD? What sets it apart from classic monster-catching simulators? What makes it deserve your Poke-dollar?

Classic game-play and
addictively nostalgic.
Gotta Catch em All!

Even if it is a freakin' pain...

Having not played one of these games seriously since the old days with Gold, I found this really easy to get into. Part of it, obviously, was that the game perfecly appealed to my inner child. It brought back fun memories of holding down and B to try to up my capture rate. Wasting my Master Ball on the first slightly difficult Pokemon to wander by. Buying 50 repels just so I don't have to look at another goddamn Zubat!

But mostly because I got Kurt to give me a Charmander egg.

Gotta catch One!
