Fission Mailed Stache!

So for the past two weeks I have been focusing on gaming and school... Mostly gaming, which is a good thing right? So in other words, I have not had time to be able to provide articles and what-not due to thanksgiving and, like I said before, school... Its the week before finals, and instead of using every second I have studying for them I decide to explain what I have been up to for the past two weeks!

Since there was a Steam sale last week, I bought a few games for super cheap. I ended up buying Kane and Lynch 2, and Recettear: An item Shop's Tale with a few others but I really only cared about the latter. They were each 5 bucks, which was a good deal in my opinion and both of them are not bad at all.

Here are my thoughts:

Kane and Lynch 2

Action. ACTION!!!!

Me and my brother Spookyboots bought this game for the online co-op, and it has been pretty fun. We are already at the end of the game after 2.1 hours of game play and this doesn't bother me. The combat and game design is so repetitive that if it was any longer, I would have never finished it. The only thing I would note about the game is the camera, which is fun and annoying at the same time. When you run, the camera shakes and what not like a camera man is following you, which gives it a neat action movie feel. Other than that, it is a very uninspired ride through series of unfortunate events of some gangsters you hardly have feelings for, so far at least. Maybe the ending will light up my senses.

Parasite Eve

So I found this one store in Vancouver that sells old PS1 games and they happened to have a few old school RPGs that I have been wanting; Parasite Eve 2 and Brave Fencer Musashi. Since I already had Parasite Eve 1 in my possession, I decided to play the game again (after 10 years) and I forgot how good it is. The battle system is probably one of the most creative and simplistic systems I have played in a RPG and it really is quite addicting. There are a large variety of weapons to utilize, and many "traits" you can add to them by transferring them from one weapon to another. This customization can be very fun, and actually require you to plan out what you are going to do with each weapon.

The dialogue however, is a little flat and the menu design could have been done much better. The white text during story events with no background is a little annoying, but I understand why they decided to do that: it gives it a more cop-like feel. The menus look nice, but I feel it could have been done better with solid menus rather than transparent ones.

I am very satisfied with Parasite Eve so far, but it seems like a very short RPG since I have played it for about 6 hours now and I am already on the second disc.

I'm not going to talk about Recettear, since my colleague HedinnWeis already has an article up about that.

These are really the only narrative type games I have been playing lately, since I mostly have been playing competitive games to express my stress in a different medium. Anyways, Older PS1 RPGs have been holding my interest than any newer games right now, they just have a certain feel about them that makes it feel like a much better RPG than most of the newer ones that have been out.
